Beginner Students

What is the best way to teach beginner piano students and to inspire, engage and motivate them in their first lesson?

Is it through opening a method book and teaching students how to read middle C?

Or, is it through:

  • Exploring the piano
  • Creating musical stories
  • Playing games
  • Playing by ear
  • Transposing
  • Harmonising and
  • Improvising?

If you ask me, beginner piano lessons should be the most exciting, creative and engaging lessons you teach.

It is your chance to help form the beginning of a life-long passion for music and piano in your new student.

Finding Piano Sheet Music

If you like free things, (who doesn’t!) then you need to check out a website I use for piano sheet music.

I use a website called G Major Music Theory and while the layout won’t blow you away, the content is fantastic.

Check out this video for a tour of the website.

A great thing about this website is that it orders music in terms of difficulty, so you can quickly find out what music will suit your student, without having to download all of the sheet music first.

There’s a tab for 1st Pieces for the ultimate beginner, and it goes up to Intermediate Level Four.

The icons also let you know if there’s backing tracks or other instruments and they all have PDF downloads – super helpful.

Here’s what I’m talking about:

The Sheet Music

The piano sheet music for beginners is, of course, quite basic, and would be something similar to what you will see in a method book.

Some of them also include the fingering, which is helpful for beginners.

Here’s what Mary Had a Little Lamb looks like – this is the most beginner level sheet music on the website.

What I also love about this website is it provides you with easy arrangements of classics.

Yep, we know every beginner student is going to want to learn Für Elise!

While, I think this  piece is over-taught at all levels, this is a great arrangement and can be a big win for beginner piano students.

Here’s the easy version of this classic piece of music, you can teach to beginners.
