The best teachers are lifelong learners, always questioning the way they do things and trying to better themselves. When we continue to learn, we stay passionate about our teaching and have a better understanding of our students. One great avenue for professional development is to study forĀ a teaching diploma.
Tess Hill designed the syllabus for the CTMusA (Certificate of Teaching Music Australia) and is passionate about helping teachers. She mentors candidates for the AMEB teaching diplomas, as well as examining and teaching piano students. She loves helping teachers to improve their teaching skills, and discover new ways to inspire young learners.
Having a teaching mentor and taking lessons yourself is really the best way to improve your teaching. We can learn so much by modellingĀ more experienced teachers, much more than we can from a book.Ā As Tess says to her students:
“Do it my way until you’ve find a better way, and when you’ve found a better way come back and tell me because I want to do it!”
Tess’s passion for pedagogy is inspirational. Whether you’re in Australia or elsewhere I think you’ll learn a lot from her approach to teacher mentoring.
In this episode, youāll learn:
- The types of teaching diplomas offered by the AMEB
- How you can benefit from taking a teaching diploma
- How much the exams are likely to cost you
- Why it’s so important to continue taking lessons as a teacher
- The structure of the CTMusA and ATMusA and the type of questions to expect
- How Tess mentors teachers through their diploma studies
- What the performance component of the exam looks like
- What it takes to get a distinction in the teaching diplomas

Hi Tim
Interesting to have a listen to this today. Just wondering, what are the minimum practical qualifications required to sit CTMus? I was surprised that the young lady teacher was only embarking on Grade 7 yet teaching. Iām not convinced that fairly elementary pianists can be fine teachers as theyāre still very much in the throes of development themselves.
I take the point that fine performers are not automatically fine teachers but itās somewhat concerning to hear of students yet to complete grade exams turning their hand to teaching.
Itās such a huge responsibility to set beginners up well that I feel at least an AMusA would be appropriate.
Thanks
Cathy
Hi Tim,
I’d love to get in touch with Tess. I’m thinking through how to further ‘blend’ my piano teaching and learning support interests (and work.) After listening to this podcast, it sounds like she’d be the perfect person to talk to.
Would you mind passing on her email to me? Or happy for you to pass mine on to her…
Thanks
Lea
PS. If you have any thoughts (relevant training, appropriate mentors etc) I’d love to hear them too!
Hi Tim,
I am considering doing a Certificate of Music Teaching course and found your podcast with Tess very useful. If only she lived in Sydney š You mentioned Laura Kahar as a potential Sydney mentor – hopefully I will still be able to get in touch with her to discuss this further. I am also looking into the Certificate of Music Teaching Course offered by St Cecelia School of Music but I don’t know too much about them. Do you have a podcast looking into their certificate/diploma courses? thank you
Hi,
Can you please recommend a mentor piano teacher located in Perth?
Thanks
Hi Ashley – please look up Tess. She lives in Mandurah which is about as close a recommendation that I can make.
Thanks Tim -this has inspired me to lift my game and look into the CTMus. I want to be able to help my students be the best performers that they can be and at the same time enjoying playing.
Great to hear, Jayne. I’m always happy if I’m inspiring teachers š
Hi Tim
I thorougly enjoyed the podcast.
Would Tess be able to recommend a teaching mentor in Canberra??
Thanks for you time.
Angela
Hi Tim,
I really enjoyed to watch your podcast and was wondering how I could find teaching mentor in Sydney. Also how we can obtain new recommended list if it is available or when it will be available.
Thank you.
Tania
Hi Tania. Tess recommends that you contact Laura Kahar in Sydney. She was a guest on the podcast a while ago and a student of Tess’: https://dev.topmusic.co/tttv034-building-a-piano-community-that-students-love-with-laura-kahar/
You should be able to contact her through her studio website. If not, get back to me and I’ll connect you up š
Hi Tim,
This was an excellent podcast! Thanks for including this topic, which is also very dear to my heart. I am mentoring a number of teachers and some of them are studying CTMusA and ATMusA with me. Tess mentioned that she has an updated list of resources for the teaching syllabuses. I’m wondering whether it is possible to include a link for those on this page, or perhaps you could forward my email to Tess or give me her email address please?
Many thanks!
